Back to Basics

A few posts ago, I eluded to the fact I love Stevie Nicks..this is so true. But the person on my list that I didn't give enough time too that night is Aretha Franklin.

Picture me, a little blond haired, blue eyed girl growing up in the desert of Southern California in the 70's and 80's. I was so out of place really. I loved the blues, even back then. My mom thought my sixteen year old self was nuts because I had collections containing names such as Bessie Smith, Billy Holiday, Nina Simone etc..but the one Lady (yes I did use that capitol "L" on purpose) that I spent the most time listening to was Aretha. I still melt when I hear her. Her version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters is the only one I really like, and I love Simon and Garfunkle. My all time favorite song though is "Ain't No Way". How many hours of my life have I spent listening to this song, or to "Say a Little Prayer" or "Call Me".

I grew up in the wrong location, as well as the wrong time period. I was also a Prince fanatic before it was cool, but that is a whole different post. Suffice it to say, I love all the newer stuff I've found over the years, I love music with a passion, but sometimes, a girl just needs to go home. People have asked me what I think God sounds like when he sings. Well, I don't know what "he" sounds like, but I know, without a doubt in my soul that when God sings, this is her voice.

  2. Great videos. Thank you for the compilation. Aretha has always been on my list of breathtaking voices. I haven't listened to her in a while...and this was nice.

  3. CJ, I'm so happy you liked the video's. I had to search a little to find the ones I really wanted. For the record, I really do need to email you that word verification, it was too funny.

LL, I'm really happy you liked the video's as well. Sometimes, it does take my breath away when I listen to her. I've been finding all kinds of new folk music, but for some reason this week, I've needed to go back to my "comfort food music" if you will.

  4. Just found your blog through a reference in Blogher, and I cheer for your voice! You rock, OC, and I'm a total fan. I had forgotten Joan Armatrading--thanks for reminding me: an ummmmm yes, Lady Aretha, oh yes yes. My favorite of Aretha's recorded songs is IT'S MY TURN, by Carol Bager Sager. I played it till the grooves wore out (had it on vinyl). Hooray for you, for your quest for your true self, and for your nervy, sassy, powerful voice.
