Go California!

I’m not quite ready to stand up and cheer, but we are getting closer every day to having the basic civil rights. California is the second state in the nation to legalize gay marriage. Even though this is not an issue for me at the moment, it makes me proud to say I’m from California, whether I live there or not, my heart will always be there.

From what I read in this article, there are people who are collecting signatures to ban it. I hope with all my heart they are unsuccessful at this, as I think California really is ready to make gay marriage legal, finally.

No one is asking for anything that is special or fundamentally different. We just want to have the same rights and legal protection as people who are in straight marriages do. I realize I am in a straight marriage at this time, and being so, I am fully protected within that union. But when the time comes for this to change, I know this will be an issue for me.

Besides, it is just the right thing to do. I have two very good friends who moved to Europe so that they could be legally married. One was an American citizen and one wasn’t. The threat of deportation was always there. They are safe now, but I would love for everyone to be as safe and secure as they are!

Peace,

OC
