I’m not quite ready to stand up and cheer, but we are getting closer every day to having the basic civil rights. California is the second state in the nation to legalize gay marriage. Even though this is not an issue for me at the moment, it makes me proud to say I’m from California, whether I live there or not, my heart will always be there.
From what I read in this article, there are people who are collecting signatures to ban it. I hope with all my heart they are unsuccessful at this, as I think California really is ready to make gay marriage legal, finally.
No one is asking for anything that is special or fundamentally different. We just want to have the same rights and legal protection as people who are in straight marriages do. I realize I am in a straight marriage at this time, and being so, I am fully protected within that union. But when the time comes for this to change, I know this will be an issue for me.
Besides, it is just the right thing to do. I have two very good friends who moved to Europe so that they could be legally married. One was an American citizen and one wasn’t. The threat of deportation was always there. They are safe now, but I would love for everyone to be as safe and secure as they are!
Peace,
OC
what an exciting day for equality

There have been groups here in Massachusetts trying to reverse the legalization of gay marriage since ist was first signed into law.
ReplyDeleteSo far so good however. We've been able to stop them despite their dishonest tactics with regards to petition signatures.
Go California!
I think it is a wonderful thing even if I am straight and I don't ever want to get married myself. The insurance and dealing with estates will be so much easier.
ReplyDeleteMost gay people I know are still leery. We have been up and down this road so many times. It is hard to stay optimistic. And when I read stats like; 64% of the population still believe that there should not be legal gay marriages...well, it gives me pause.
ReplyDeleteBut, wow...we never stop working and never stop dreaming. Maybe when my daughter is my age, it will be a done deal.
