OK Dear Blog Readers, OC needs some help.
While I was gone on vacation, things happened in my garden and I'm not sure exactly what to do.
List of problems:
Radishes have flowered and gone to seed. I pulled them up last night and they were tough and very hot and sort of mushy? Did I just leave them in the ground too long? I have a whole new crop, should I just pull all of these and start fresh?
Herb's have flowered and gone to seed. Specifically, Cilantro, Dill, Sage. Can I just cut off the flowers and keep going? What to do?
Some of my container tomato's on my deck had really bad branches that were close to dead, using my OC wisdom I cut those branches off and I am hoping for the best, was this the right thing to do?
The lettuce I planted before I left has not come up? What could cause this when I have row's and row's of lettuce?
My sunflowers are getting pretty big, how much do I thin? I thinned them before I left and they look fine, but what is the standard distance that works for you from flower to flower?
Can I still plant bush beans?
OK...any and all comments would be so very appreciated...
Peace,
OC
I was hoping some gardening star would feild this one but I see they haven't so I'll give my half-wit two cents.
ReplyDeleteRadishes - ditch the to sharp tasting/woody ones - there gone, new crop pull a few and try (I might not be understanding your ? here)
The herbs I still use mine after they've gone to seed untill I don't like the results - not much you can really do to herbs
Tomatoes, I would have done the same - is it right ? I haven't a clue - my tomatoes are always 'iffy'
Lettuce, my guess is not enough water - drown those babies
The sunflower - I let them fight it our for themselve unitll the flower start doing battle then take out the weakest
Not sure about the beans - six weeks is mid sept. you might get lucky if you get a good indian summer there.
XO!
Wish I could be of help. Now if we were talking about a Beer Garden here I could be of some assistance.
ReplyDeleteyour tomatoes could have wilt.
ReplyDeletedid you plant wilt resistant variety?
once wilt is in the ground, it is sort of impossible to eradicate.
after it is in soil, you have to plant wilt-resistant varieties.
or plant elsewhere.
and there is a relation betw cigarette smoke and wilt but i can't fully remember. you can look it up on google.
wilt makes tomatoes leaves wilt... turn brown, etc.
i hate it!
I have a garden but am a novice as well. As for the tomatoes, I too pruned off some dead, yellowing leaves and my tomato plant did better. As for the lettuce, I have also planted some and it has not come up yet. So I am going to keep working with it and replant some more just in case. A couple of websites that might help are: "Path to Freedom". These people have turned their entire yard into a sustainable garden. Also "Urbangardencasual.com" offers lots of hints and you can write them and ask them various questions or go through the archives. I basically just go online and research. Also, your local extension office could probably help you with your queries. Sorry I couldn't be of more help as I too am finding my way. Let us know how things work out.
ReplyDeleteJust cut the flowers off of the herbs. Radishes are harvested before they go to seed. Something may have eaten your lettuce -- it's too hot to plant more now. Wait until late August for a fall crop.
ReplyDeleteTomatoes cut off "the suckers" get a book on gardening or google it...you cut the suckers off!
Just do it O.C - it will be cathartic, imagine whatever you like at the time.
