Yes, I Work On The Phone For A Living

I’ve spent all day on the phone at work.

You know what I am growing to hate, with an intensity known only to rival canned green peas???

RINGBACKS!!

That’s right folks…I hate the suckers.

Here is the scenario:

Someone calls me, or my office and leaves a message for me or us to call them back, usually "immediately".

So dutiful little old me, will call them back, at my earliest convenience, only to be blasted in the ear with “Back In Black”.

That isn’t even the most insulting part of it though. They make you listen to the entire ring back, BEFORE the little voice comes on and say’s “so and so” is not available, please leave me a message.

Since I work for the government, and I call people that probably really do not want to talk to me very much, this can get frustrating…fast.

I don’t get Ring-Backs….not at all.

You have to pay to download them. You don’t get to listen to them yourself. What is the point?

To make someone you don’t like listen to “Back In Black”? The best one I got today was an old Simon and Garfunkle song that had to have been older than the person that had called me.

I’ve come to hate that little bitch that says to me, every other phone call I make…”Please enjoy the music while your party is reached”. Can’t stand her, and if I ever see her, I’m going to throw a cow pie at her.

So folks, do me, and all the people in thankless jobs like me a favor, save the cutesy little tunes for your own personal listening pleasure, and please don’t call me, leave me a message, and force me to call you back and listen to something I’d rather pull my own hair out than listen too.

Over and Out…
Jumping off my soapbox now,
OC

  1. Huh. Exposing myself for the technology ignoramus I am: I've never even heard of these ringback thingys. They sound hella obnoxious.

  2. I don't talk to anything that doesn't ring or speak.

I'm sure ring backs are in violation of some Homeland Security Provision, especially when it applies to gberment employees.

Claim Executive Privilege. It seems to work for others.

  3. You said ringbacks.

All I could think of was Rollbacks from Wal-Mart.

    And I don't even shop at Wal-Mart.

    duuuude. looooong day.

I can only say that, as far as telephone work is concerned, I telemarketed fruit one summer when home from uni. It about killed me.

So my hat goes off to YOU.

    Be well, OC.

  4. The music that comes on when a phone goes straight to voice mail is a "ring back"? Ok,thought it was a ring tone?
They really don't bother me, I find it interesting...everyone is so different, everyone's taste is different, it's interesting to me.
Hang in there...practice some deep breathing!

  5. So that's what they are called. I've only experienced these a couple of times and fortunately there were songs I liked. I was almost disappointed when the person picked up.

I can definitely see how these could become annoying quickly however, especially if your job requires you to make frequent calls.

  6. I read your entire post with puzzlement. Was not entirely sure what the hell you were talking about. And then when I read some of the comments, I realized that I wasn't the only uneducated one about ringbacks. I honestly had never heard of them.

  7. I've worked phones twice. Once at the end of an 800 number (that was interesting) and once as internet tech support (that was frustrating.)

Kudos to you for even dealing with the phone. ick.

  8. Just checking in. May your Friday be filled with as few ringbacks as possible!

Have a great day! Be well, OC.

  9. Your joy could be increased with self employment - when the horrid phone interrupts your life all hours of the day or night.

Once a woman called at 3am (not kidding) I hurried to the phone as I have elderly parents and thought "this has to be an emergency".

"Hello I am sorry to call so late but I work nights and this is the only time I had available".

I was aghast -- and replied "this is the only time I have to sleep" and hung up.

I wish I knew where that stupid wench is now -- I could send her some ringbacks.

  10. I've never understood the logic of these either. You don't get to enjoy the music yourself... unless, of course, you call yourself. But who does that? And why gamble that your caller will like what you like? Odds are they won't. I know I've never been a fan of AC/DC... They do sing "Back in Black," don't they? My sympathies.

  11. For a few years (a few years ago) I did part-time work as a telephone recruiter for an employment company. In addition to screening prospective employees for a variety of clients we also conducted employment interviews via telephone.

This is when I first encountered "ringbacks." Which I thought, at the time, was the stupidest, weirdest, most annoying invention I'd ever encountered.

The songs some folks chose to represent themselves -to prospective employers- sheeeesh! !

    I feel your pain, truly.

  12. I LOVE working at home. But, that voice you are annoyed by - that would make me crazy (or is that crazier?).
